“I think it was more excitement because 
we see families every year who ask about 
joining French Immersion,” said Oldfield. “I know we 
were really excited to have another entry point, you know, 
especially for people who might be new to the country and 
missed that opportunity.” 
By introducing Late French Immersion, LRSD is creating more equitable 
access to programming aligned with Strategic Action 2.5: Access to 
French Immersion. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to 
ensuring all students have meaningful opportunities to participate.
Students are expected to build their skills over three years and join their 
peers in the regular French Immersion stream by high school.
“I’m just really excited to see them continue to gain that 
confidence and that skill. In Grade 9, they’re going to find 
themselves joining in with their peers, and nobody’s going 
to know that they started a little later,” said Oldfield. 
Learning another language opens doors to new experiences, 
perspectives and connections.
