increased the urgency of that work, as emerging 
tools rely on underlying data and can amplify both its 
strengths and its risks.
“Anything we’re going to build or use AI on top of needs 
to be safe first,” Wilson said.
Over the past several months, LRSD has completed a Data 
Governance Charter built on key pillars including data 
quality, privacy and security, clear accountability, and data 
literacy. A governance structure has also been established, 
bringing together leadership from across departments, 
alongside a broader network of data advisors, custodians 
and school-based champions.
“That we are doing data governance… as the foundational piece 
as we’re considering AI adoption,” Wilson said, describing the 
approach as central to the division’s work.
At the heart of the initiative is a recognition that the data 
managed by schools is among the most sensitive in the 
community, including student records, staff information and 
family details. LRSD leaders emphasize that this information 
directly affects decision-making, from student supports to 
resource allocation, and must be both accurate and secure.
Data governance provides the structure to support that work, 
establishing clear roles, standards and processes that ensure 
information is protected, used ethically and accessible to those 
who need it. Division leaders say the growing use of AI has

the division has spent the past year developing a governance framework alongside the introduction of 
internally built AI tools. Rather than treating AI adoption as a standalone initiative, LRSD has focused on 
aligning it with a broader strategy grounded in leadership, organizational values and responsible data use.
